The first time I tried to buy a Burning Man ticket I spent three days refreshing a page, got into a queue that crashed twice, and ended up watching the Main Sale sell out in about forty minutes while I sat there with my card details filled in and my browser frozen. I eventually got in through STEP — the official resale programme — six weeks later, after someone I'd never met voluntarily sold back their ticket at face value because they couldn't go. That is the Burning Man ticketing experience in a sentence: chaotic, occasionally beautiful, and entirely unlike buying a ticket for anything else. If you want to get to Black Rock City 2026 — which runs August 30 through September 6 at the Black Rock Desert in Gerlach, Nevada — understanding this system before you need it is the difference between going and not going. Here is every sale, every price and every deadline you need.

How does the Burning Man ticket system work?

Burning Man does not do a single public on-sale date. Tickets are released across multiple separate sales throughout the year, each with its own registration window, eligibility criteria and price structure. The fundamental thing to understand is that you have to register in advance for most sales — showing up on the day with your credit card ready does nothing if you missed the registration window. This catches a significant number of people every year.

All tickets, regardless of price tier, grant exactly the same access to Black Rock City. There is no VIP. No priority entry. No better position in the city. The tiered pricing exists because of the gifting culture at the core of Burning Man — people who pay more subsidise reduced-price tickets for those who cannot afford the higher tiers. New for 2026: payment plans are available across all ticket tiers, which is a meaningful change for anyone who wants to spread the cost rather than pay in a single transaction.

You also need a vehicle pass separately if you are driving onto the playa — this is not included in your ticket, costs $165, and has a maximum of one pass per purchase. Forgetting it and realising at the gate is a rite of passage nobody wants. Sort it at the same time as your ticket.

What are all the Burning Man 2026 ticket sales?

Here is the complete sales calendar for Black Rock City 2026, in order.

The Sunrise Sale ran on February 4, 2026 and is now closed. It was the first public sale of the year, offered at higher price tiers, and specifically designed to subsidise lower-priced tickets in later sales. If you missed it, move on — there are more opportunities ahead.

The Ticket Aid Programme opened February 25, 2026 and offers reduced-price tickets to participants on limited incomes. Applications require documentation and are reviewed individually. If this applies to you, check the official Burning Man ticketing page for current status and deadlines.

The Stewards Sale runs from March 4 through March 31, 2026 and is invitation-only — it exists for registered theme camps, art installation crews, mutant vehicle crews and groups supporting Black Rock City infrastructure. If you are part of one of these groups, your group lead will have received purchase links. This sale requires a Burner Profile rather than the standard registration process.

STEP — the Secure Ticket Exchange Program — opened March 18, 2026. This is the official resale system and one of the most reliable ways to get a ticket if you missed earlier sales. More on how it works in the dedicated section below.

The Main Sale opens April 29, 2026 at noon Pacific Time, with registration opening April 20 and closing April 28. This is the biggest public sale of the year and the one most general attendees target. Registration requires only a working email address — no Burner Profile needed. Maximum two tickets and one vehicle pass per purchase. Be ready at noon on the dot: the lower price tiers go fast and nothing is guaranteed.

The OMG Sale is the final public sale before the event, typically landing in late July or early August. Exact dates have not been confirmed yet — subscribe to the Jackrabbit Speaks newsletter at the Burning Man Journal to get the announcement as soon as it drops. Inventory at the OMG Sale is limited and prices sit in the higher tiers, but it is a genuine last-chance opportunity if you have not secured a ticket by then.

There is also a Renaissance Champion Programme new for 2026, which taps connectors to invite networks and creative collectives — particularly international crews who have never made it to the playa. If you are part of an organised group or community, it is worth investigating whether your network qualifies.

Burning Man 2026 Tickets

How much do Burning Man 2026 tickets cost?

The 2026 ticket price structure runs across six tiers. Get the Gift tickets are available at $550 and $675 — the $550 tier is extremely limited and will be the first to disappear in any sale. Pay Your Way sits at $775 and tends to last a little longer than the lower tiers, though nothing is guaranteed in the Main Sale rush. Give the Gift tickets — the higher end of the tiered structure — are available at $975, $1,500 and $3,000. These tiers subsidise reduced-price access for the community and tend to remain available throughout most sales.

Vehicle passes are $165 each, purchased separately, maximum one per transaction. Taxes and fees apply to all purchases on top of the listed prices. Payment plans are now available for all tiers — during checkout you will be offered the option to pay in instalments rather than all at once, which is new for 2026 and worth using if cash flow is a consideration.

What is STEP and how does the official resale system work?

STEP is Burning Man's official peer-to-peer ticket exchange, and it is the cleanest way to get a ticket outside of the main sales. When a ticket holder can no longer attend, they list their ticket back into STEP at face value. Buyers sign up to a waitlist and are matched to available tickets in order of their position in the queue. Mixmag's festival access guide covers the mechanics of official resale systems well, but STEP is one of the more functional examples in the festival world.

The important mechanics: you authorise your payment card in advance when joining STEP, which means you are committing to purchase if a ticket becomes available for you. You cannot see your exact queue position. You cannot join before it opens. And you can purchase vehicle passes through STEP without also needing to buy a ticket, which is useful if you missed your pass in an earlier sale.

Tickets that have been transferred cannot be relisted in STEP. Tickets set for shipping can only be sold back before shipping begins in mid-June. If your plans change after that point, the transfer tool is the alternative option — this lets you pass your ticket directly to another person without going through the exchange system.

How do you avoid Burning Man ticket scams?

Every year, ticket resellers advertise Black Rock City passes online — on secondary market platforms, on social media, in Facebook groups. The majority of these listings do not represent real inventory. These platforms are selling on speculation: they list tickets they do not yet own, hoping to acquire them later through the official sales and fulfil the order at a markup. This is against Burning Man's ticket terms and conditions, and any ticket sold above face value plus service fees is at risk of being cancelled and voided at the gate.

The simple rule: only buy from an official Burning Man Project sale or through STEP. Do not buy from individuals on Facebook, Reddit, Craigslist or any secondary platform that is not STEP. If a price seems too good or too available, it is not real. If a reseller claims guaranteed inventory before a sale has even happened, they are speculating. The peace of mind of knowing your ticket is valid at the gate — after you have made the trip to the Nevada desert — is worth the patience required to navigate the official system.

While you wait, what should you start planning for the playa?

One of the things experienced Burners will tell you: the outfit planning starts now, not in July. The best playa looks take time — custom pieces, layered systems that work across the extreme temperature swings between the 100-degree afternoons and cold desert nights, footwear that can handle alkaline dust for eight days straight. Burning Man's 2026 theme is Axis Mundi, centred on connection and the vertical axis between worlds. Visually that translates to celestial, cosmic, otherworldly — gold, silver, mirror pieces, fringe that moves in the desert wind, bodysuits that photograph brilliantly against dust storms and fire art at 2am.

Browse the Burning Man outfits collection while the ticket system works itself out — having your look sorted means one less thing to stress about when August arrives. And if you want to layer in some playa accessories once you have the core pieces, the festival clothing collection has transitional pieces that work across the full temperature range of a Black Rock City week.

FAQ

When is Burning Man 2026?

Burning Man 2026 runs from Sunday August 30 through Monday September 7 at the Black Rock Desert in Gerlach, Nevada. The theme is Axis Mundi.

When is the Burning Man 2026 Main Sale?

The Main Sale opens April 29, 2026 at noon Pacific Time. Registration opens April 20 and closes April 28. You must register during that window to be eligible to purchase.

How much do Burning Man 2026 tickets cost?

Tickets range from $550 (very limited) to $3,000 across six price tiers: Get the Gift at $550 and $675, Pay Your Way at $775, and Give the Gift at $975, $1,500 and $3,000. Vehicle passes are $165, purchased separately. All tiers are eligible for payment plans in 2026.

What is the cheapest Burning Man 2026 ticket?

The lowest price tier is $550 through the Get the Gift structure, but these are extremely limited and typically disappear within minutes of any sale opening. The next tier at $675 is more consistently available but also sells fast in the Main Sale.

What is STEP?

STEP is Burning Man's official Secure Ticket Exchange Program — a peer-to-peer resale system where ticket holders who can no longer attend sell their tickets back at face value. Buyers join a queue and are matched to available tickets in order. It is the only legitimate resale option endorsed by Burning Man Project.

Can I buy a Burning Man ticket on StubHub or Viagogo?

You should not. Resellers on third-party platforms often list speculative inventory they do not actually hold. Any ticket sold above face value plus service fees is at risk of being cancelled and voided at the gate. Only buy through official Burning Man sales or STEP.

Do I need a vehicle pass as well as a ticket?

Yes, if you are driving a vehicle onto the playa. The vehicle pass is a separate purchase at $165, maximum one per transaction. You can purchase it at the same time as your ticket during any sale.

What happens if I miss all the ticket sales?

STEP remains open and tickets become available as people sell back throughout the year. The OMG Sale in late July or early August is also a final structured opportunity. Beyond that, theme camp connections and community networks sometimes have routes to legitimate tickets, but be extremely cautious about any offer that comes through unofficial channels.
